REGULAR informal social afternoons are running at the Cape Clear Hall every second Thursday with an aim of nurturing connections and reducing isolation.<\/p>\n
The fortnightly coffee days from 1pm to 4pm are for anybody who wants to come for a chat by the wood fire, and organiser Evelyn Cannon said attendees and their needs mould and shape the group.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur aim is to meet as much of the community through the day as possible. We have plenty of room, and there are ladies that are going to bring their spinning wheels along,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy children love playing board games, they can play them on Thursdays with other children in the community, and this builds relationships between the next generation of locals within the Cape Clear area.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re here to meet the social needs and the connection needs of people of all ages, and use the afternoons and the space in a way that’s going to benefit people most.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adults can enjoy a quieter period before 3pm, when the primary school dismisses students. Between 3pm and 4pm, young people are welcome to head to the hall to play with their friends before heading home.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have any nearby cafes to take the kids for a snack after school, so in the future, we may put on some milkshakes and afternoon tea as well,\u201d Ms Cannon said.<\/p>\n
Her family made the decision to move to Cape Clear for the friendly and helpful social atmosphere the country offers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeeting my neighbours has been an important part of my journey out here, and I\u2019m looking forward to building those relationships,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
