AFTER driving up to Ballarat and seeing some craft groups in action, Cheryl Gilbert decided Meredith needed a one too.<\/p>\n
Now, each Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm, she coordinates Meredith Community Centre\u2019s own sewing group.<\/p>\n
Members are invited to bring their own projects or come along if they\u2019d like to learn some basic stitches or embroidery skills.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe meet once a week in the studio space during the school term, and make it quite cosy in there,\u201d Ms Gilbert said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe set the trestle tables up, sewers can sit with people or at their own table, enjoy a chat, some tea and coffee, and maybe even a cake, biscuit, or slice.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the moment we have two ladies who are quite proficient in quilting, but the group is dedicated to sewing more broadly than that.\u201d<\/p>\n
With some members learning patchwork, and others only just past the beginners\u2019 stage, Ms Gilbert said it\u2019s a space where people are encouraged to ask for help, and there\u2019s a lot of skill and knowledge sharing.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce the group is established, there would be opportunities for us to work on projects together, choosing an organisation to support, like an aged care home, and making something special to donate to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would love to see more young people come along as well. See if it\u2019s what you\u2019re looking for, and if it\u2019s not, there\u2019s no commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n
