{"id":85730,"date":"2022-10-01T04:48:27","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T18:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=85730"},"modified":"2022-09-29T21:19:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T11:19:59","slug":"more-than-a-week-of-difference-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/more-than-a-week-of-difference-making\/","title":{"rendered":"More than a week of difference-making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALTHOUGH Dementia Action Week has just wrapped up, advocates are encouraging communities to continue carrying its message.<\/p>\n<p>The annual campaign ran last week from Monday, 19 September to Sunday, 25 September, with the theme, \u2018a little support makes a big difference.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe said breaking down discrimination was a major focus of the seven days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have the opportunity to raise the profile of dementia, and particularly discrimination, is really important. It\u2019s one of the biggest things that impacts those that have it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been an amazing week but the more we can do to make the community understand what dementia is and how it impacts people, the better off people with dementia and the carers are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ballarat, we\u2019ve got around 3500 people living with dementia and without a meaningful breakthrough those figures are set to double by 2058.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2022 report from Dementia Australia estimated that 487,500 Australians live with the condition while nearly 1.6 million people care for those who have been diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder of Bigger Hearts Dementia Alliance Ballarat Anne Tudor said this year\u2019s theme is something people can continue to act on beyond the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really an example of how someone can actually do something to make an enormous difference even if that\u2019s inviting them out for a coffee or a drive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if people could just increase their own understanding of dementia and treat people in their own normal way, that would be ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85732\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-85732\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/09\/bush-window-e1664450365698-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/09\/bush-window-e1664450365698-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/09\/bush-window-e1664450365698-976x1024.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/09\/bush-window-e1664450365698-768x806.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/09\/bush-window-e1664450365698.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Tudor and Melvin at Woowookarung Regional Park\u2019s Dementia Friendly Forest and Sensory Trail, a key part of Ballarat\u2019s dementia-friendly infrastructure. Photo: FILE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bigger Hearts Choir put on a fundraising performance on Sunday, and Deakin University associate professor Dr Mark Yates, a dementia specialist, said it\u2019s important to acknowledge initiatives like this, and the work that\u2019s being done across Ballarat for dementia awareness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the week is as important as the infrastructure that exists now in Ballarat. There\u2019s a real network of activities now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a new carer support group running&#8230; The Eyres House dementia centre has been revamped.
