LABOR candidate for the State seat of Ripon, Martha Haylett, visited communities throughout the electorate last weekend to talk to volunteers in anticipation of the election.<\/p>\n
Former Premier Steve Bracks accompanied Ms Haylett on Saturday\u2019s campaign trail, which included a stop at Smythesdale Fire Brigade, and surrounding businesses.<\/p>\n
She said it was important to speak to town locals to understand what\u2019s needed in the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been lots of stone-throwing and negativity, but I want to be a strong voice around the decision-making table for our rural and regional community,\u201d Ms Haylett said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaking a difference to me means more funding for our hospitals, road, and rail, making sure we continue our incredible investments in education, and delivering free nursing and midwifery degrees for next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was talking to two teachers from Beaufort, and talking about the upgrades to Beaufort Secondary College and what else we can do there.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can throw money into advertising and billboards but it\u2019s people power and having these person-to-person conversations that makes a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Bracks launched Ms Haylett\u2019s campaign in Maryborough earlier this year and said Ripon will be a key electorate to watching during the State Election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ripon electorate is so important to the outcome of this election. It\u2019s a big geographic area so I think winning Ripon will secure a third term for Labor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got a good candidate which is fantastic. Martha reminds me of what I was like when I stood in 1985. She\u2019s got great capacity, very abled, and I think she\u2019ll do a great job.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been talking to the CFA here about their roles in flood recovery and the future of it here at Smythesdale.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt some point, the government would want to invest in this station. It needs to be done up a bit and it\u2019s such an important part of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n
