CHILDREN are being invited to get creative in the garden as part of a workshop taking place next week at the Haddon Community Learning Centre.<\/p>\n
Set for 11am on Wednesday, 25 January and open to primary school aged kids, the workshop will entail a pot planting and rock painting exercise led by horticulturalist Crysta Anderson.<\/p>\n
She said she hopes the class will inspire children to pick up a spade and get more involved in their parents\u2019 garden.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want them to get their hands a bit dirty, to show them it can be fun and to get them to grow things where there\u2019s a result at the end,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey get to look at something they created and hold onto it or give it to a grandparent or teacher, It\u2019s all about building confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
The workshop is capped at about 10 people with parents to accompany their children throughout the exercise.<\/p>\n
After offering advice to other plant lovers through her business Home Garden Consult, Ms Anderson said she saw a need to pass on her passion to younger generations as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d been trying to get my own child interested in gardening and I started doing things with her and her friends like potting up plants and pointing out flowers at nurseries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI noticed her interest levels increased and her friends wanted more to do with it so that\u2019s how this came about. This will be my first proper class for children.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s really important to pass this knowledge onto kids so it\u2019s not lost. I\u2019d hate to lose the art of horticulture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Anderson will follow up her workshop with an adult-centred class in late February on clover pot planting.<\/p>\n
