A SKATE, scooter, and BMX competition within the Skate Park Leagues Vic Western Regional Series is coming to the Ballarat Skate Park.<\/p>\n
YMCA Action Sports operations director Matthew Brett said the comp will be a part of the youth SPU-FEST at the park in early February, and the aim is to get young people involved in sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all about encouraging participation for people who have never competed before and are wanting to compete, and those who just want to try it with their friends and have a fun day, but it\u2019s also facilitated for more advanced riders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about skate park activation, encouraging positive use of those grounds, to build confidence in young riders, and give kids in the region a chance to compete in a sanctioned event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s part of the larger national series as well, so those that do place get points for the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a lot of really skilled young riders in the regions and we want to create pathways for them, if that\u2019s what they want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Between 30 and 60 competitors are expected, and each will have the skate park to themselves for two 45-second runs, where they\u2019ll be judged on their tricks.<\/p>\n
There are many age divisions for both male and female competitors and medals and prizes are on offer.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a chance to improve, it\u2019s creating pathways and community connections,\u201d Mr Brett said.<\/p>\n
Ahead of the event, 13-year-old competitor Benny was at the skate park preparing last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I\u2019m skating, it\u2019s freedom,\u201d he said. \u201cI come to the skate park every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of SPU-FEST there\u2019ll be entertainment, live music and activities on site, workshops, food, and drinks.<\/p>\n
The drug and alcohol free event rolls between 11am and 4.30pm on Saturday, 4 February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
