{"id":88098,"date":"2023-03-03T04:57:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T17:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=88098"},"modified":"2023-03-02T12:00:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T01:00:39","slug":"local-push-for-national-voice-campaign-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/local-push-for-national-voice-campaign-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Local push for national voice campaign launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEMBERS of First Nations communities took part in a recent launch of the local \u2018yes\u2019 campaign in the lead up to\u00a0the\u00a0planned referendum on an Indigenous\u00a0<span class=\"mark9agi00hmx\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">voice<\/span>\u00a0to Federal parliament later this year.<\/p>\n<p>A yes result in the proposed referendum, that\u2019s still without a date and question, could mean recognition for First Nations peoples in the constitution and thatA yes result in the proposed referendum, that\u2019s still without a date and question, could mean recognition for First Nations peoples in the constitution and\u00a0the formation of an Indigenous advisory body.<\/p>\n<div>Wadawurrung woman Macaylah Johnson said she is keen\u00a0for\u00a0people across the region\u00a0<b>to\u00a0<\/b>understand the potential outcome of the referendum.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;We need to run community forums and inform everyone, so they\u2019re well educated on what the voice will lead to, how we can use it, and how we get there to achieve that,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cSeeing my people with a seat at the table is something that I\u2019ve never seen before, but it opens so many doors and opportunities for our whole community to inform at the top level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to us as First Nations people to write the next chapter and embrace this new opportunity to pave our own future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten-year-old Charlotte Kanoa said the perspectives of her people should matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have so much knowledge about what works for us, having a voice to Parliament would be so great, and give us a better future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, said the voice to Parliament would operate much like one of the city\u2019s key groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe voice to Parliament would not have veto power or hold funds&#8230; it\u2019s really like the consultative mechanism we have at the City of Ballarat, the Koorie Engagement Action Group, but at a national level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms King said the referendum is expected to be held between October and December, that she will be voting yes, and anyone is welcome to call her office to ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a referendum working group of First Nations people and they are establishing the date,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about people, it\u2019s about everybody in our community, the pathway to reconciliation, and we\u2019ve got to think, how will we feel as a nation when we wake up the next day and we\u2019ve voted yes?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about making sure that the Uluru Statement from the Heart&#8230; of First Nations people coming together and asking to be listened to, and I think it will be an incredible moment for the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope very much that we have a yes vote here in Ballarat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen Heap said she was proud to support the voice, not on behalf of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative as its CEO, but as a Yorta Yorta\/Barkandji woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important to acknowledge the Voice to Parliament, and as an Aboriginal person, I fully support it. It\u2019s a brilliant thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t talk for our whole community, and I wouldn\u2019t bear to do that.
