WITH the footy season getting underway in just a few weeks, the Ballarat Football Umpires Association are seeking new custodians of the game to join the ranks.<\/p>\n
The BFUA are recruiting for field, boundary and goal umpires in the Ballarat, Central Highlands and Maryborough and Castlemaine leagues as well as for weekly school programs.<\/p>\n
Anyone of any age or gender is welcome to sign up and give it a try.<\/p>\n
BFUA chair Deborah Sleep said the organisation needs as many umpires as possible to cover the large area.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo support these leagues we require a pool in excess of 330 umpires,\u201d she said. \u201cOur goal is always to strive to engage additional numbers, 400 running umpires would be fabulous.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith only a number of weeks until the start of the season, our numbers are still short of required levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are currently seeking anyone interested to come along and give it a go, you will be surprised at how much fun you will have.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sleep said being involved is rewarding as umpires make new friends, increase their fitness level and create a team bond in a professional environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cSport is critical to the health of a community, it brings people together with a common interest,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMental health of individuals is supported by this common bond and a strong supportive and inclusive environment the BFUA.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a part of any football game we get the best view, become an umpire.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pre-season training is currently taking place at City Oval Ballarat, Mason\u2019s Lane Reserve in Bacchus Marsh and Camp Reserve in Castlemaine.<\/p>\n
