RUGBY players from across the state and country will descend on Delacombe this weekend.<\/p>\n
Ballarat Highlanders Rugby Club are hosting their second Charity Sevens Tournament at Doug Dean Reserve this Saturday, 25 March, which president Tristan McGrath said is set to be bigger than ever.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have eight teams coming along from Melbourne, Sydney, Melton, Geelong, and Swan Hill,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year we had a lot of Melbourne metro teams, and it\u2019s great to see more country teams coming in.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn each game there will be seven players, and each half goes for seven minutes, so it\u2019s a lot faster than normal 15s rugby, with a lot more tries, a lot more speed and skill, and it\u2019s a lot better to watch.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a spectacular thing to watch, and we encourage anyone to come along and be impressed by the skill and speed of some of these lads.\u201d<\/p>\n
Funds raised through entry fees, a barbecue and other sales on the day, and auctions will be donated to GROW mental wellbeing programs, and this organisation was chosen by the players through a vote.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe idea to support mental health stemmed from COVID lockdowns. So many players have benefited from mental health programs, so it\u2019s important for us to support that,\u201d Mr McGrath said.<\/p>\n
Jerseys designed by Wadawurrung artist Jenna Oldaker will be auctioned, and Ms Oldaker will also conduct a welcome to country at the start of the day about 9.25am, before kick-off at 9.30am.<\/p>\n
Food and coffee vans will also be on site all day, so spectators of all ages can stay for just a game or two, or the whole day.<\/p>\n
\u201cKids love it as well. There will be plenty of balls floating around so kids are welcome to have a kick and a play around,\u201d Mr McGrath said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
