AN EXHIBITION uncovering Ballarat\u2019s old newspapers is now open at the Eureka Centre.<\/p>\n

Collection: Newspapers from Ballarat\u2019s Past<\/em> presents a wide range of old papers predominantly from the 1850s and 60s.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s to highlight special things in the collection that people normally don\u2019t get to see or that they might not be aware of,\u201d said research librarian Simon Jacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere seems to be a resurgence in people wanting to know about their local community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The collection includes two editions of The Corn Stalk<\/em> by James Oddies, a diggers representative who fought against the miners\u2019 licence, and it is one of the rarest items in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was him and his brothers attempt of a newspaper,\u201d said Mr Jacks. \u201cThey only did a few issues, and it was mainly to provide information on their business.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chinese Advertiser<\/em> and The English Chinese Advertiser<\/em> are also notable publications as they provide a link to the Chinese community here at the time of the gold rush and few copies survive today.<\/p>\n

There will also be works from the original The Ballarat Times<\/em>, Ballarat Punch<\/em>, the original The Miner<\/em>, and The Ballarat Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith most of the things in the collection you\u2019ll find there\u2019s no political correctness and there is still the divide between Ballarat west and east,\u201d Mr Jacks said.<\/p>\n

He said he hopes the exhibition can shed a light on new aspects of Ballarat\u2019s history during the goldrush.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is on until September at the Ballarat Research Hub at Eureka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
