{"id":89289,"date":"2023-04-28T04:58:04","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T18:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=89289"},"modified":"2023-04-28T09:18:58","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T23:18:58","slug":"history-recalled-at-haddon-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/history-recalled-at-haddon-service\/","title":{"rendered":"History recalled at Haddon service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRASS band music filled the air at Haddon Memorial Park as more than a hundred people gathered for the town\u2019s Anzac Day service.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was hosted by members of the Haddon and District Lions Club, who\u2019ve been leading the event since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Club chair CJ Ellis was MC for the event and said the service has seen a steady incline in participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting bigger and better each year for us,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the first time I was here some 15 years ago, this would have about 50 people so it\u2019s building up bit by bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89292\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89292\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6771-scaled-e1682484522857-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6771-scaled-e1682484522857-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6771-scaled-e1682484522857-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6771-scaled-e1682484522857-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6771-scaled-e1682484522857.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Haddon Community Concert Band performed throughout the town\u2019s Anzac Day service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adam Bennet, Haddon Lions president said it\u2019s important to maintain the annual tradition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the service club for this district, we feel it\u2019s important to celebrate and drive the cultural prosperity of the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one way we do that, ensuring that our locals have an ability to join this service that\u2019s tailored for them that talks about our history and brings that forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was supported with music from the Haddon Community Concert Band with pieces like Waltzing Matilda, and the Australian national anthem.<\/p>\n<p>Lions member Murray Pope gave a reading on the landing of Gallipoli after which a presentation on the role of doves in World War One took place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89293\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89293\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6838-scaled-e1682484662786-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6838-scaled-e1682484662786-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6838-scaled-e1682484662786-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6838-scaled-e1682484662786-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/IMG_6838-scaled-e1682484662786.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community members and organisational representatives marched towards Haddon Memorial Park to begin the ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ten crosses were laid at the memorial by Haddon Primary School students to commemorate fallen World War One soldiers with a connection to the town.<\/p>\n<p>An oration was given on each soldier\u2019s history followed by a release of doves.<\/p>\n<p>One of the cross-carrying students was Layla, and her father Cameron Morris said he couldn\u2019t have been prouder of his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty special. I\u2019m absolutely proud of her. It\u2019s great to get the schoolkids involved and to see them marching this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in Haddon so I\u2019ve been going to these for probably 20 years.
