{"id":90519,"date":"2023-06-11T04:55:04","date_gmt":"2023-06-10T18:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=90519"},"modified":"2023-06-07T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T06:58:46","slug":"a-story-to-tell-under-the-umbrella","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/a-story-to-tell-under-the-umbrella\/","title":{"rendered":"A story to tell under the umbrella"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIKE Ballarat\u2019s shoppers of yesteryear, it\u2019s time to <em>Look for the Red Umbrella.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Local researcher Geoff McArthur is publishing his first non-fiction book about the city\u2019s foremost umbrella salesperson of the mid-to-late 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>The story follows Margaret Muller, and her family, who went on to have a thriving chain of umbrella shops in Ballarat and Bendigo in the 1870s and 1880s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book is set amongst the streets and shops we know so well, predominantly in Sturt Street and Bridge Street,\u201d McArthur said. \u201cOne of the shops was in the Old Colonists\u2019 building on Lydiard Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs Muller\u2019s husband ended up in Pentridge Prison. She showed incredible strength and resilience to save the business and expand it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time where business was dominated by men, what she achieved was quite remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough my research, I have retrieved many great newspaper reports of the incidents surrounding them, letters to the editors and court reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McArthur began to focus on this part of Ballarat\u2019s history when he discovered Agnes Greig, Mrs Muller\u2019s older sister, had lived in his home on Rodier Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out the family had been witnesses to the Eureka Stockade, and that Agnes\u2019 sister had married a man who became an umbrella manufacturer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left it for 30 years, but after I retired from being a schoolteacher&#8230; I set off to investigate the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I dug into Trove, I realised something had happened to the family. It was like a massive jigsaw puzzle; crime, deaths, all sorts of things. It was a story that needed to be told.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent a year pulling all these stories together, trying to work out what had happened, and gradually it all started to piece together into quite a remarkable story about the family, and the father, who had been a civic leader involved in scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Look for the Red Umbrella<\/em> is not only the title of the book but was the advertising slogan of Mrs Muller\u2019s chain of shops.<\/p>\n<p>McArthur expects local readers will enjoy for the familiar scenery.
