{"id":91547,"date":"2023-07-26T04:57:30","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T18:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=91547"},"modified":"2023-07-14T16:57:16","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T06:57:16","slug":"familiar-tunes-take-new-form","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/familiar-tunes-take-new-form\/","title":{"rendered":"Familiar tunes take new form"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN OPERA performance of well-known songs is coming to the Ballarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute this August.<\/p>\n<p>The performance will feature a string quartet led by violinist Matt Hassell who is a full-time member of Opera Victoria\u2019s orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the bill are Wagnerian tenor Bradley Daley, soprano Alison Jones, mezzo-soprano Caroline Vercoe, and compere Chris McKenna<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people who love music and are not prepared to sit through hours of a show, they get to hear some of the highlights which is fun,\u201d said Daley.<\/p>\n<p>The songs performed include those familiar from movies, television shows, advertisements, sporting events, and cartoons.<\/p>\n<p>This includes Nessa Dorma from <em>Turandot,<\/em> which is featured in the soccer world cup, and the Flower Duet<em> Lakme, <\/em>which is used in a <em>British Airways<\/em> advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I studied music, I remember my head lecturer teaching us about what a classic was,\u201d said Daley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that lasts for hundreds of years is the perfect balance of the familiar with the unfamiliar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind this performance is that it will have this balance, keeping the audience intrigued and excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you listen to a piece of music and its totally new that it\u2019s going to get a bit boring after a while whereas if you hear a pop song that\u2019s so familiar there\u2019s nothing unexpected that\u2019s going to be equally boring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the pieces we\u2019re introducing will be something they\u2019ll be familiar with but also not something that you hear every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daley is an experienced performer who has seen praise for his performances in the roles of Siegfried, Otello, Florestan, Canio, Don Jos\u00e9, and Erik.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first Australian tenor to perform the challenging role of Siegfried in Wagner\u2019s <em>Ring Cycle<\/em> in 70 years, however, he did not discover this talent until he was an adult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t come from a musical background at all, and I don\u2019t think I saw my first opera until I was 18 or 19,\u201d said Daley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI studied acting and wasn\u2019t very good at it, but luckily I sung a song for the music department for a theatre production, and I guess I got discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opera gala will be held on Sunday 13 August from 2pm and tickets can be purchased at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hermaj.com\/events\/opera-gala\/\"><strong>hermaj.com<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN OPERA performance of well-known songs is coming to the Ballarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute this August.
