FOLLOWING on from their six-week evening social competitions, members of the Meredith Tennis Club are looking to continue growing the sport in the region.<\/p>\n
A tryouts event and grading day is set to take place next weekend and secretary Bridget Dyer said is all about attracting new people to the club.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re trying to get as many people along to get into tennis,\u201d she said. \u201cIn particular, we\u2019ll be looking at people interested in joining our competitions so we can grade them.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether that\u2019s our nighttime competitions or Saturday tennis through the Buninyong or Geelong association competitions, we want to see what they\u2019re interested in.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt won\u2019t be an official grading but it\u2019ll give us a sense of who belongs in which team and who\u2019s going to play together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Dyer said the club is looking to have two seniors teams and about seven junior teams of about 45 players before the upcoming summer season.<\/p>\n
With close to 10 teams confirmed already, and their recent winter competitions seeing similar numbers across both nights, Ms Dyer said the sport looks to be getting more popular in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been participating in the association competitions since the club was revived about four years ago and it\u2019s grown each year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started with three or four junior teams, then five, then six and an orange ball. We might event have three senior teams this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cKids are now getting used to playing tennis here, and we\u2019ve also had parents getting involved in the night competitions and wanting to get into the senior teams.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve actually had more people saying they\u2019d like to see our social competition return for spring and summer as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meredith Tennis Club\u2019s tryout day will run from 9.30am on Saturday 9 September at the Meredith Recreation Reserve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
