{"id":92797,"date":"2023-09-01T04:56:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T18:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=92797"},"modified":"2023-09-01T09:10:42","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T23:10:42","slug":"first-aid-course-has-kids-in-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/first-aid-course-has-kids-in-focus\/","title":{"rendered":"First aid course has kids in focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">A BABY and child first-aid course is scheduled\u00a0<\/span>to be delivered<span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u00a0to parents and carers in Golden Plains Shire next month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The three-and-a-half-hour session will be led by PAEDS Education, and co-founder Sarah Duncanson said it\u2019s been designed to support adults in managing injuries and illnesses kids may have.<\/p>\n<p>PAEDS Education facilitators are rurally based mums who come from a hospital-based paediatric nursing backgrounds and are set to address \u201call the essentials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll cover everything from fractures, to bites and stings, poisons management, choking, burns, CPR,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we\u2019re nurses, we have a huge focus on recognising red flags for serious illness in children and understanding when a child is deteriorating, then where to go to access health care services, and how to get there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do anaphylaxis and asthma training, teach parents and carers how to use EpiPens, Ventolin and spacers, and do CPR training on mannequins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interactive, informative, there\u2019s have lots of practical opportunities, hands-on demonstrations, and time to ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Duncanson said not a day goes by where her PAEDS staff don\u2019t receive feedback from a parent or carer who has had to manage an injury, illness, or accident at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey might have had to manage choking at home and have sent in a thank you,\u201d she said. \u201cIf they hadn\u2019t have done the course, they say they wouldn\u2019t have known what to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things happen in a blink of an eye, parents are first on the scene, and have to know what to do to manage those pre-hospital accidents and emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring COVID, it was particularly pertinent as accessing face-to-face health care services was really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the skills participants learn are things Ms Duncanson said are applicable for all ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not just learning for babies, but for the child\u2019s lifespan, because they can be transferable to the adult population as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The course is set for the Bannockburn Cultural Centre on 5 October from 6pm and visit bit.ly\/45G97uY to register.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A BABY and child first-aid course is scheduled\u00a0to be delivered\u00a0to parents and carers in Golden Plains Shire next month.
