{"id":93139,"date":"2023-09-18T04:59:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-17T18:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=93139"},"modified":"2023-09-14T21:42:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T11:42:08","slug":"survey-says-take-the-foot-off-the-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/survey-says-take-the-foot-off-the-gas\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey says take the foot off the gas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIS winter, Environment Victoria volunteers in the Ballarat region surveyed residents about gas energy.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the consultation has been to collate feedback on the State\u2019s Gas Substitution Roadmap, and whether Victoria should steer away from gas use, for affordability and environmental sustainability reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteer Liz Wade said results reported a \u201cloud\u201d collective message that community members want to go electric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith new homes unable to connect to gas from January 2024, we need a clear pathway for the remainder of the community to make the switch to electric homes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overwhelming majority of local people want policies to support residents to replace gas appliances with efficient electric alternatives as those appliances reach the end of their life, in an affordable way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSixty-six per cent are wanting financial support like rebates and interest-free loans for electric appliances, and a further 48 per cent need more accessible information about how to make the switch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96276\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96276\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/09\/Daniel-Andrews-Victorian-Premier-with-us-all-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During their visit to Spring Street, Ballarat\u2019s Environment Victoria volunteers met the Premier Daniel Andrews.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHistorically Victoria had vast gas reserves in Bass Strait, today gas prices are linked to the global market and are no longer cheap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas extraction is having a negative impact on the environment, and we now recognise that burning gas in our homes can be hazardous to our health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The volunteer group recently visited Parliament House in Melbourne and presented the Central Victorian survey results to the Member for Wendouree, Julianna Addison, the Member for Eureka, Michaela Settle, and the Member for Ripon, Martha Haylett, on the iconic Spring Street steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we were at parliament, we also had the opportunity to meet Premier Daniel Andrews and discuss our work with him also,\u201d Ms Wade said. \u201cIt was definitely an exciting day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the government to support all Victorians, particularly those on low incomes, to transition away from gas.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THIS winter, Environment Victoria volunteers in the Ballarat region surveyed residents about gas energy.
