{"id":93806,"date":"2023-10-06T04:45:01","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T17:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=93806"},"modified":"2023-10-03T21:03:32","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T10:03:32","slug":"sticks-battle-at-national-lacrosse-tourney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/sticks-battle-at-national-lacrosse-tourney\/","title":{"rendered":"Sticks battle at national lacrosse tourney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility saw hundreds of interstate visitors this week with young lacrosse players taking part in one of Lacrosse Australia\u2019s national championship.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s Under 15 Boys and Girls National Tournament ran for a week and ended on Tuesday, making the competition\u2019s first time in a regional Victorian location.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen teams of more than 300 players from Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and New Zealand took part in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Kadow travelled from Western Australia to watch his son Zac compete with the Western Braves and said the event showcased the rising talent in Australian lacrosse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s definitely a lot of up-and-coming players and they\u2019re definitely going to be ones to watch out for over the next few years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son\u2019s just turned 12 this year and I think he\u2019s one of the youngest in the competition. It can be a bit intimidating so he\u2019s definitely had to prove himself but he\u2019s loving it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the players have shown great sportsmanship. I\u2019m blown away by the facilities here as well. It\u2019s a great put-on.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93809\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93809\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93809\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/10\/20231001-Lacrosse-MC-0711-scaled-e1696327179330-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/10\/20231001-Lacrosse-MC-0711-scaled-e1696327179330-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/10\/20231001-Lacrosse-MC-0711-scaled-e1696327179330-768x634.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2023\/10\/20231001-Lacrosse-MC-0711-scaled-e1696327179330.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event saw teams from Australia and New Zealand battle it out at the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lacrosse Victoria\u2019s general manager Michael Sholly said the competition\u2019s Ballarat debut was about boosting the sport in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe chose Ballarat as part of the Commonwealth Games program of taking sport to regional towns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to grow the game here. We have a supporter in Tasmania who\u2019s looking to support Ballarat lacrosse with a summer competition and recruiting AFL or soccer players to come join because there\u2019s similar strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sholly said the competition provided an ideal pathway for developing players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this is bigger, we have multiple teams in each state whereas once they get to under 18s, it\u2019s the one state girl\u2019s and one state boy\u2019s teams,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these kids will go on into under 18s next year for Victoria.
