A MATCHMAKING event this weekend at the Ballarat Function Centre is giving people the chance to walk away with a new four-legged friend.<\/p>\n
As part of Greyhound Racing Victoria\u2019s Greyhound Adoption Program, 16 retired racing canines will be available for potential ownership.<\/p>\n
The event is being organised by the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club, whose general manager Jodie Faralla said it will be all about helping people decide whether the breed is for them.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll have experts on site to ask about various things to do with the greyhound breed and having them as pets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019ll also be some previous adopters who can provide guidance and talk firsthand about their experience. There\u2019ll also be an option to foster but we\u2019re hoping to find forever homes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe dogs\u2019 temperaments, their likes and dislikes, and personality is well-known so we\u2019ll look at the person\u2019s circumstances and whether the dog will be suited for their particular environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Each greyhound has been desexed and defanged and undertaken assessment through the Greyhound Adoption Program.<\/p>\n
Adoption will cost $100 and include a lead, collar, rug, and membership access to the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club\u2019s exercise yard.<\/p>\n
A no-questions-asked return policy is in place should the match be unsuitable.<\/p>\n
Ms Faralla, who\u2019s had her greyhound Zoe for six months, said they\u2019re a low maintenance benefit for any home.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re fairly light shedders so they don\u2019t make a lot of mess, and they\u2019re a smart dog,\u201d she said. \u201cI got an extra-large doggy door put in at within the day she\u2019d worked it all out.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy greyhound, for example, doesn\u2019t bark, she\u2019s very calm and docile and sleeps for 20 hours a day. If I take her for a walk, she\u2019s tired before I am.\u201d<\/p>\n
