VISUAL artist Rosalind Lawson is displaying more than 100 works showcasing the natural flora and fungi of her surroundings as part of her Landscape over Time and Place exhibition.<\/p>\n
With 120 oil paintings spread across four panel canvases, the subject of each work was found within a one-kilometre radius of Lawson\u2019s Napoleons property.<\/p>\n
She said the project for her has long been an environmental one.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis whole project of botanical art has been going on for about 10 years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an environmental project, to make people aware of what\u2019s really there and to sort of ask people to go and observe.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the fungi, there were a couple species I couldn\u2019t work out so I\u2019ve had people come and write me notes and local mycologists helping out.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re in a time where people are really interested in fungi and the state of our forests and mycelium. Such amazing things are being done in that field.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lawson previously launched the collection at the Mercure Ballarat earlier this year, which featured more than 200 works across 10 panel canvases.<\/p>\n
Having sold nearly 30 pieces during that show, she\u2019s spent the past four months reproducing the purchased works with the permission of the owners to use in the local show.<\/p>\n
Lawson said despite the smaller number of paintings on display, there are some new additions to the Shire-based exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the wildflower paintings, a couple have been shown locally but they haven\u2019t been shown together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven when I was reproducing the fungi paintings I\u2019ve sold, I found three new species to work with, so it all just goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Landscape over Time and Place is set to serve as a preview for the municipality\u2019s Golden Spaces 12-month pilot project to debut next year.<\/p>\n
Lawson\u2019s exhibition is on show at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre until Wednesday 6 December after which it will be displayed at Smythesdale\u2019s The Well from Tuesday 23 January until Monday 29 April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
