THE 2023 International Day of People with Disability will fall on Sunday 3 December and community members are set to mark the occasion the following day in Bannockburn.<\/p>\n
A free IDPWD guided discussion and morning tea is set for the Golden Plains Civic Centre on Monday 4 December at 10.30am, led by director and founder of Liberty Disability Services, Amanda Glasson.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am one of three directors at Liberty Disability Services, all of whom live with disability inclusive of intersectionality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will be speaking about the importance of raising awareness of life with disability, the journeys people with disability have discussed with me, and how we can all improve the life of a person with disability just by having a little awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Glasson said IDPWD showcases that disability isn\u2019t a scary concept.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are an amazing bunch of humans who enjoy everyday things and have everyday goals, we just go through these days differently to what society in general would go through,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes these days, months, years, or lifetimes can be extremely challenging, and we need IDPWD celebrations to educate the wider community in the journeys we go through, so that we can live our best lives and we can do that with community support and understanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cI encourage everybody to come along to the morning tea, join in the conversations about disability, help us raise awareness, and eradicate the stigmas.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will be available for anyone who may have questions on NDIS or access services as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
IDPWD is marked annually by the United Nations with a goal to put people with a disability in the spotlight and boost community understanding around their experiences.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s theme is, \u2018United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for, with and by persons with disabilities.\u2019<\/p>\n
