{"id":95666,"date":"2023-01-07T04:57:58","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T17:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=95666"},"modified":"2023-12-21T22:17:01","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T11:17:01","slug":"aussie-culture-from-artists-brush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/aussie-culture-from-artists-brush\/","title":{"rendered":"Aussie culture from artist\u2019s brush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARTIST Tim Vagg\u2019s <em>Cultureghosts<\/em>, which is on in the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s Backspace, is seeking to re-frame the role of the typical Aussie male in culture.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the colours and graphics of magazine the <em>Australasian Post<\/em>, and old social studies books, Vagg said the exhibition of mixed media works examines the country\u2019s identity and attitudes, particularly in the mid-to-late 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drew from both those sources with the imagery, and I\u2019ve been interested in the inadequacies of the depiction of culture and history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s face it, there\u2019s a blurred and misogynist view, very much about the white male, and other stories were obliterated in dominance of that white male culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition\u2019s main \u201chero work,\u201d references a retro \u2018OMO adds brightness\u2019 washing powder ad campaign with a skipping girl cartoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe allegory of washing away the dirty, or the other, and keeping the whites white, was interesting to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the show is a lot of imagery taken from the Australasian Post, like the Winfield cigarette ads, the sexist cartoons, and images of the Australian male.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vagg studied at the University of Ballarat\u2019s Arts Academy but said only a few of his classmates are still practicing.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t imagine his life without painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t not do it,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve tried to not do it, but I just can\u2019t. It\u2019s in me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a form of therapy, I suppose. I\u2019m also a musician, so I\u2019m always creating in one form or another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home I\u2019ve got a big shed studio, which is bigger than my house, so I have space to paint, and my partner is a video artist, so she is a big inspiration and sounding board for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now based in Kyneton, Vagg said he\u2019s been excited to reconnect with his hometown of Ballarat and to be backed by one of the country\u2019s leading galleries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt Gallery of Ballarat and the staff here are so awesome, and I\u2019ve wanted to have some work shown here because I think regional galleries, like Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton, are just booming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the opening, I had a really warm reception which blew me away.
