{"id":96069,"date":"2024-01-26T05:00:31","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T18:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=96069"},"modified":"2024-01-24T16:43:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T05:43:54","slug":"shires-achievers-celebrated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/shires-achievers-celebrated\/","title":{"rendered":"Shire\u2019s achievers celebrated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE efforts of unsung heroes based in the municipality were highlighted earlier this week with the winners of the Golden Plains Shire Council Community Awards 2023 revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients among the awards\u2019 four categories were announced during a presentation at Haddon Community Learning Centre on Tuesday afternoon following 11 individual and six group nominations.<\/p>\n<p>Lin Hocking-Turnbull from Smythesdale was named Citizen of the Year for more than two decades of volunteering and event organising.<\/p>\n<p>She said she was shocked and humbled to receive the recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very thrilled, and it\u2019s nice to think someone out there appreciates the work you put in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably from about 2005, we started decorating the streets and doing the Christmas decorations with a bit of a barbecue and carols. Then we got onto Anzac Day and it\u2019s spread from there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been very lucky to live where I do, and I think if you\u2019re lucky like that, you\u2019ve got to put back in, that\u2019s only fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96071\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96071\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96071\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/01\/IMG_3867-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lin Hocking-Turnbull has lived in Smythesdale since 1995 and was rewarded with two decades of volunteerism with the Citizen of the Year award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Young Citizen of the Year award went to Cape Clear\u2019s Caitlyn Cadby, who last year took part in the Golden Plains Shire\u2019s Young Women\u2019s Leadership Program while completing year 12.<\/p>\n<p>She said the program was a worthwhile experience and that it was great to see her contributions to the initiative, including a speech on women in sports, were acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard about this through the Youth Activation Committee,\u201d she said. \u201cWe learned about topics that affect young women and it was adapted to the context of Golden Plain Shire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to meet young people from the Shire with different backgrounds and participate in fun excursions like the wildlife park and we also had the opportunity to do our first aid certificate as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96073\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96073\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/01\/IMG_3870-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caitlyn Cadby received the Young Citizen of the Year award for undertaking the municipality\u2019s Young Women\u2019s Leadership Program while completing VCE at Ballarat Clarendon College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meredith Tennis Club president Maddy McColl took home the Community Impact Award for her efforts in reviving the group in 2019 after it lay dormant for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The sole individual nominee amongst an intake of community groups, she said the award to her was the result of a team effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t have done it without all the support from my club,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s not just me, it\u2019s everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were about five key contributors to getting the club running again. Our first season we had four teams and now we have 50 kids coaching which is phenomenal for a small town like Meredith.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96074\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96074\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/01\/IMG_3883-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maddy McColl won the Community Impact Award for rebuilding the Meredith Tennis Club, which now runs regular social competitions and is currently in its fourth season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Senior Citizen of the Year award went to Bannockburn artist Rosslyn Bosnar, who was absent from the presentation, for her creative efforts including helping to run the Golden Plains Arts Trail, and helming the Bannockburn and District Art Group.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96075\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96075\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/01\/0G2A5170-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosslyn Bosnar has been an exhibiting artist for nearly 20 years and her contributions to the region\u2019s creative scene saw her named the Senior Citizen of the Year.
