A NEW local theatre company is aimed\u00a0at providing\u00a0opportunities for the region\u2019s professional actors to perform in unique spaces.<\/p>\n
Established by actors and Ballarat Arts Academy alumni Miranda Donald and Adam Turnbull, Overlook Productions will stage their first play in April and there\u2019s plans to have a long-term focus on local works.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very interested in presenting work that talks about Australia and is in an interesting Australian voice,\u201d Donald said.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s first one-act production, I See You, will be staged in The Crypt, the re-branded 18th Amendment Bar on Camp Street.<\/p>\n
This play is an original work written and directed by Donald, and its opening night on Wednesday 17 April will double as a world premiere.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s an \u201cemotional\u201d story full of grief and sorrow, but also joy and humour.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is my second play,\u201d Donald said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got nine in the cast and one crew member.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe venue is intimate and small, it\u2019s underground and interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turnbull is in the play\u2019s multigenerational cast and said he\u2019s enjoying the experience of building a character which has never been brought to life before.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can put any angle, backstory and subtext on your character,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can delve into them, make them more three-dimensional through the rehearsal process, and it\u2019s fantastic.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can play with it so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
Donald and Turnbull said Ballarat has a strong performing arts community, particularly in musical theatre, and Overlook is a way to add a branch to what\u2019s on offer.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to create good quality theatre that\u2019s meaningful and worthwhile, with a mix of professional stage and screen actors, and trained people,\u201d Donald said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheatre is for everyone and we want the audience to walk out having had an amazing experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe think we\u2019ll produce one or two shows a year to keep up our craft and skills.\u201d<\/p>\n
