{"id":99667,"date":"2024-10-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=99667"},"modified":"2024-10-03T12:31:16","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T02:31:16","slug":"national-tourney-a-hit-as-juniors-smash-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/sport\/national-tourney-a-hit-as-juniors-smash-it\/","title":{"rendered":"National tourney a hit as juniors smash it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT Badminton Association and Badminton Australia hosted the YONEX U13\/U17 Australian National Team and Individual Championships at Ken Kay Badminton Stadium over the last week.<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred and fifty young players from across Victoria and the country, their coaches, managers, and families, descended on Wendouree for the annual competition from 26 September to 2 October.<\/p>\n<p>BBA secretary and the tournament&#8217;s deputy referee, Sandra David said hosting the best juniors in Australia was a pleasure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/54028902041_f1959ec1_43841.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"303\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0Victoria always makes an impact.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stadium comes up so well for events like these,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really easy to run a national carnival because of the size of the venue and because we&#8217;re solely a badminton stadium, not multi-purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to showcase the juniors here in Ballarat, and it&#8217;s great for our community. We make a lot of money for the association on the canteen, and we&#8217;ve had a lot of volunteers help us all week, and we can&#8217;t run these events without them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had some outstanding performances&#8230; people have been in awe. It&#8217;s also been a great opportunity for young umpires to develop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/54029205344_6d47feeb_43856.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hundreds of up-and-coming stars were on court putting on a show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even if they don&#8217;t make it to the big time playing, they can still be involved in the sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing Australian National Team and Individual Championships Sportsmanship Award for an Under 13 player was named after Ballarat Badminton Association stalwart Rhonda Cator, a former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, and long-time player, coach and manager.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a real honour for Rhonda,&#8221; Ms David said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/54029125748_15f1c06b_43839.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken Kay Badminton Stadium is ideal for large tournaments as it was built for badminton, not multiple purposes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat has become the home of the annual tournament and Badminton Australia CEO TJ Weistra said it&#8217;s always a great place to play, umpire or spectate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The greatest part of holding events in Ballarat is there are so many fantastic tourism and hospitality venues to visit in between matches,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether it is soaking up the natural beauty of Lake Wendouree, enjoying one of the many hospitality offerings, or panning for gold at everyone&#8217;s favourite Sovereign Hill&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT Badminton Association and Badminton Australia hosted the YONEX U13\/U17 Australian National Team and Individual Championships at Ken Kay Badminton Stadium over the last week.
