Clean out ahead of natural disasters

May 23, 2025 BY

WITH storm season approaching, residents are being encouraged to prepare early and safely dispose of household problem waste at their local Community Recycling Centre (CRC).

Problem waste such as old paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, fluoro globes and tubes, household and car batteries, smoke detectors and motor oils cannot be disposed of in regular household bins.

However, they can be dropped off for free at a CRC, where they will be safely collected, recycled or disposed of.

If left lying around, these items can pose a risk to the environment and community health—particularly during floods or other disasters.

It’s also worth noting that waste facilities may be impacted during a natural disaster, meaning you may need to hold onto problem waste for longer than expected if not cleared in advance.

Don’t leave it to D-Day—declutter your home ahead of storm season and take advantage of free disposal services.

Handheld batteries (up to 5kgs) can be dropped into one of the many B-cycle collection points at retail outlets across the region.

Items with embedded batteries—such as e-scooters, cordless vacuums, vapes and smartwatches—can now also be recycled for free at select council locations.
