Radio Luxembourg starring John Waters in Tweed
John Waters is set to take the stage at Twin Towns on January 10, performing his Radio Luxembourg show with his six-piece band, Stewart D’Arrietta and The Chartbusters. The singer and actor, celebrated for his work across film, television, and theatre, will embrace his first love – live music performance – with a tribute to the defining sounds of the 1960s.
Born in London, Waters was in his teens and early twenties during the 1960s at a time when commercial radio licences were not available in the UK, pop and rock music was broadcast from continental Europe from the principality of Luxembourg – a clever move by the British record industry to circumnavigate the laws of the day.
Waters is shameless about his passion for the music and said that aside from the nostalgia it represented, it was one of the best and most influential eras in contemporary music.
“I think we all will love forever the music that was the soundtrack of our teens and early adulthood,” Waters said.
“It accompanied our first stirrings of love and freedom. I consider myself lucky that this was the rock and pop music of the Sixties. Timeless classics came thick and fast. The originality was profound.”
Waters has recently wound up a critically acclaimed and successful national run with Daniel McPherson in the two-hander The Woman in Black. Passionate about the theatre, Waters is relishing the return to live band gigs.
“It feels blissful,” he said.
“I loved being able to return to a classical form of theatre and still have the chops to pull it off, but this is my first love. I did it when I was sixteen, and I’m doing it 60 years later.”
Waters and The Chartbusters will reprise and reinvent classic hits such as Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?, Waterloo Sunset, To Love Somebody by the Bee Gees, Itchycoo Park, and the anthemic My Generation.
The shows around the country often feature audiences dancing in the aisles. Waters said there was a reason the songs were still played on classic FM radio on high rotation.
“There’s a reason each subsequent generation has its own heroes, yet constantly they also return to this period.
“The reason is that it’s the most creative period of modern music by a country mile. So, what do you do? You dance.”
