Ready to rib Byron
AFTER spending his honeymoon in Byron Bay and holidaying there many times with his family, Dave Hughes feels like he knows the town well.
So he will have plenty of fodder for his upcoming gigs at Byron Theatre and Brunswick Picture House in May.
“I love noticing things about a town and talking about it,” he said. “But while you can take the piss out of it, you can’t get around the fact that Byron is a stunning place.”
Hughes kicked off his WTF! tour at the Adelaide Fringe Festival last week and said the show is about where his life is at at the moment.
“It’s called WTF because my son is doing so many things at the moment to make me shake my head,” he said. “I’m saying WTF to him every second day.
“He thinks he’s pretty cool and I’m not cool. He keeps telling me about all the terrible things people are saying about me on TikTok. I just got out of the jungle (for the reality TV show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!) and that was a ridiculous experience so I’m forming some routines about that.
“It’s very changeable but I like to think I keep it current.”
Hughes became a household name after performing a routine on long-running variety program Hey! Hey! It’s Saturday in the late 1990s and said stand-up comedy is still his first love.
“My wife says I’d choose stand-up comedy over my family and I say I did stand-up comedy before I had a family,” he said.
Hughes is also joining the cast of TV game show Taskmaster Australia and will appear in a coming episode of Australian Story.
“I’m not sure if I’m allowed to talk about that yet or not,” he said.
WTF! is at Brunswick Picture House in Brunswick Heads May 30, Byron Theatre May 31 and Ballina RSL on October 11.
