AOTEAROA import Ben Lerner has risen fast up the Australian jazz ranks and quickly established himself as an emerging voice.

The 2025 East Coast tour is a precursor of the production and release of Lerner’s debut album later in the year and includes a stop in Murwillumbah on February 8.

The young saxophonist formed the quartet in early 2021 and performed as part of jazz organisation SIMA’s Jazz: NOW summer festival, the Inner West Jazz Fest, a New Zealand tour, and regular appearances in Sydney jazz venues.

Since his arrival in Australia five years ago, Lerner received the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Scholarship, The Henderson Global Mobility Scholarship, and The Ernest Heine Family Foundation Scholarship. He was also a finalist for the prestigious National Jazz Award in 2024.

Since graduating from the Con, he has been awarded a scholarship for a master’s degree at the revered Manhattan School of Music in New York, US, in September this year.

He learned from the greats with teachers and mentors, including artists such as George Garzone, Immanuel Wilkins, Dr Roger Manins, Will Vinson, Dr Simon Barker, and Dr Jo Lawry.

Earning his stripes and in the presence of elite players, he has worked with luminaries such as Mike Nock, Matt McMahon, Laurence Pike, Steve Barry, Andy Gander, and Jonathan Crayford.

Eminent jazz legend pianist Mike Nock said Lerner had already greatly impacted Sydney’s jazz scene.

“His infectious enthusiasm, combined with his positive energy and inclusive attitude, make this young man a musician to watch. Catch him whenever you can,” Nock said.

Musician and lecturer at the University of Auckland lecturer Roger Manins said Lerner was exceptionally gifted.

“He works tirelessly to facilitate his artistic growth and, in doing so, contributes immeasurably to the Australasian scene,” Manins said.

“He is a fiery soloist who plays with creativity, passion, virtuosity and humour.”

To catch this rising talent before he takes off stateside, book the Citadel concert, which begins at 7.30 pm.
