Rock out for NYE at Twin Towns
Ella Hooper’s renaissance is having a long build. The indomitable frontwoman of Killing Heidi has recently graced our screens with Elly-May Barnes in the disability music documentary series Headliners. She is one of the artists behind Roar, the coming women’s music festival.
This New Year’s Eve, Hooper brings her powerhouse sibling duo for end-of-year celebrations at Twin Towns showroom.
Two decades ago, the folk-pop song Kettle launched Ella and Jesse Hooper into high radio rotation. Subsequent hit Weir reached #2, followed by Mascara at #14, in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Their debut album Reflector won four ARIA awards, sold four times platinum, and the pair took out the APRA Songwriters of the Year award in 2001.
After a decade of diverse solo and duo projects, the band renewed the magic for the 20th anniversary of the Queenscliff Music Festival in 2016.
In 2018, Killing Heidi embarked on a sold-out tour of capital cities, followed by an extensive regional run, and co-headlined a national tour with 1990s rock icons Baby Animals.
In 2020, the duo returned for a 23-date tour across the country in the Red Hot Summer Tour alongside fellow rock luminaries Hunters & Collectors, James Reyne, The Living End, The Angels, Baby Animals and Boom Crash Opera.
Rolling Stone said Hooper’s performance was “as alive as ever… vibrant and rockin’.”
Hooper is constantly amazed by the audience’s responses.
“What Killing Heidi’s music meant and still means to the people that shared that amazing time with us really blows me away,” she said.
“I meet so many people, especially young women, who tell me how Killing Heidi inspired them to be themselves, back themselves or even start a band.
“I’m completely honoured that it had that effect on people,” she said.
Special guest artist Kingswood formed in 2007 and is regarded as one of Australia’s premier rock groups.
Comprising a group of Melbourne school friends, the raw energy and unique sound made Kingswood one of Melbourne’s best-loved bands, with sellout shows. The band released its sixth studio album Home in 2023.
