Anzac Day in the Tweed
SERVICES will be held across the Tweed on Anzac Day to honour the legacy of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and commemorate the sacrifices of all Australians who have served.
Residents can attend one of several local events or mark the day in their own way, reflecting on the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that continue to resonate throughout the country.
The Kingscliff RSL Sub-Branch will host a dawn service at Rowan Robinson Park at 6 am, followed by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast at the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club.
A community march will leave from the Bowls Club at 10.30 am and head south along Marine Parade to the Kingscliff Cenotaph, where the main service will be held at 10.45 am.
Sub-Branch secretary Hayden Drayman said hosting three services allowed more people across the community to take part in the commemorations, and highlighted the historical significance of Cudgen.
“From the first events in this area, there was no Kingscliff, Cabarita or Pottsville,” the 30-year-old former submariner said.
“It was just Cudgen. The registered cenotaph is on the grounds of Cudgen Public School, so it’s very interconnected and important to the community.
“That’s why we also have a 4.28 am service at Cudgen in line with the time the troops landed on Gallipoli.”
He said the Kingscliff Woolworths and local school P&C had supported the morning gathering, reinforcing the community nature of the service.
The Tweed Heads dawn service at Chris Cunningham Park will begin at 5.55 am, with the march to follow at 10.30 am and the main service at 11 am.
Twin Towns will host a family-oriented commemoration from 10.50 am, with coverage of the march on a large screen and viewing from the Wharf Tavern undercover area in case of bad weather.
From 11.30 am, local students and teachers who took part in the march and service are invited to Level 3 at Twin Towns with their families, where live entertainment and commemorative displays will be held.
Additional services will be held at cenotaphs and Shrines of Remembrance in Burringbar, Murwillumbah, Pottsville, Tumbulgum, Tyalgum and Uki
