Byron dementia awareness event
A COMMUNITY event will host an open conversation to break stigma, share insights, and support the dementia-friendly community in Byron Bay on April 10.
The Byron Community Centre, Byron Seniors Club and Byron Shire Respite Service aim to raise awareness and understanding of people living with the illness.
Event organiser Sabine Muschter said dementia touched so many lives.
“There’s still a lot of fear and misinformation around it,” Muschter said.
“This event is about giving people the knowledge and confidence to navigate a dementia diagnosis, whether for themselves, a loved one or within the community.”
Let’s Talk Dementia brings together leading experts in dementia care and brain health to discuss the realities of dementia, share personal stories and offer guidance to those affected.
Speakers include Dr Rachel Jones, a geriatrician at Ballina Hospital, Kathleen Cator, a clinical psychologist at Byron Bay, and Christine Aggar, an Associate Professor at Southern Cross University’s Faculty of Health.
Dementia remains the most significant health challenge of our time, impacting more than 400,000 Australians, yet it is widely misunderstood. The event aims to change this with essential conversations and fostering a more dementia-friendly community.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of dementia, practical strategies for care and support, and information on lifestyle changes that can help protect brain health.
Whether living with dementia or caring for someone who is, this event offers a welcoming space for conversation and connection.
