A STRONG contingent of about 120 competitors from Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club will head to South West Rocks to contest the NSW Country Championships.
The three-day carnival, to be held from January 23-25, is one of the final lead-up events before the state and Australian titles and will attract clubs from across regional NSW.
Cudgen finished second on overall points at last year’s championships and again shapes as one of the leading clubs, with strength across nippers, open and masters divisions.
Club president Adam Mills said the championships were a key opportunity for athletes to test themselves in a wide range of disciplines.
“We’ve got a decent-sized team heading down this year and a lot of the kids are coming off a two-week intensive training program,” Mills said.
“Country championships is a grassroots carnival, and it gives kids the chance to compete in most of the beach and water events.
“Once they get to state they usually focus on their strengths and where they might medal, so this is a great all-round experience.
“It’s also a bonding event for the club and a good chance to get away as a big group.”
Cudgen has built a strong reputation as a breeding ground for surf lifesavers who progress to state and national competition.
In 2025, Jools Loemker, Fletcher Burdekin and Phoenix Preston were named in the NSW under-17 team of the year, while Scott McCartney claimed coach of the year honours.
Isabella Arghyros and McCartney recently represented NSW at an interstate event in Sydney.
The club continues to invest in its athletes through employment programs and fundraising initiatives, helping members cover equipment and travel costs.
A strong under-17 and under-19 group will be backed by an emerging crop of nippers at the country carnival.
“Scarlett Mison won the under-12 swim last year and Sierra Jay Gore was the under-11 beach sprint champion,” Mills said.
“They’re both going again and we also have Lewis Bolt and Vada Wessel, who have had success in board events.
“Olly Sharpe is one of our top senior competitors and will be a favourite in the open men’s iron race.”
