CONSTRUCTION of smaller and more affordable homes across Lismore is being boosted by a $15,000 grant to help people build or relocate new homes in the region.
The council housing grants are part of a $1.2 million pool, with about half already allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The program aims to support first-home buyers, people relocating due to flood impacts, and participants in the NSW Reconstruction Authority buyback scheme.
Lismore City Council is also encouraging community housing providers and developers building multi-unit projects for affordable rental to apply.
Mayor Steve Krieg said the program is part of council’s broader push to improve housing diversity and affordability across the region.
“This is a targeted, practical step we can take to help more people call Lismore home — especially those still recovering or trying to get a start in a tough housing market,” he said.
“The response so far has been encouraging, but we know there are still many out there who qualify and just haven’t applied yet.”
Andre Stamatakakos was one of the recipients of the grant and also qualified for the state government’s $10,000 First Home Buyers Grant. He has now built a house and used the grant funds to pay for landscaping.
“Having that extra $15,000 meant we could complete things we hadn’t expected to finish, which took the pressure off and made a huge difference,” he said.
“The fact that the Council is investing back into the city, and the community is heartwarming. It shows they’re committed to helping us build a bright future here.”
Saffron Bond, another recipient of the program, said the grant has been crucial in helping her relocate her home after the floods.
“This grant has helped make the move smoother, covering some of the costs so I can focus on getting the house to a safer place, out of the flood zone, where we can settle,” she said.
“This grant helps me try to claw my way back to my position before the flood.”
The grant is paid upon completion of the new dwelling, once an Occupation Certificate is issued.
To be eligible, applicants must have lodged a Development Application, Complying Development Certificate or Section 68 application via the NSW Planning Portal.
