TWEED Shire Council has announced a range of free and low-cost programs for seniors across the shire to support healthy ageing.

In a community with twice the state average of residents over 65, the programs are designed to help community members stay independent, engaged and connected.

Stand Together is an eight-week fall prevention course designed to increase seniors’ awareness of everyday hazards, improve their strength and balance, and help them stay independent.

The confidence-building sessions on April 2, June 1 and August 6 at the Tweed Shire Council Administration Building in Tweed Heads cost $30 for the program.

In Cooking and Nutrition, participants will learn the basics of preparing nutritious meals with MisterChef, a six-week cooking program for older men who have little or no experience and may find themselves responsible for meals for the first time.

Two sessions will be held at the Tweed Heads South Community Centre on March 10 and June 2, from 9 am. The cost of $20 covers the full six weeks, and bookings are essential.

In technology and online safety, participants learn how to shop and pay bills online safely. The program is focused on online safety and increasing basic digital literacy and recognising online scams.

Shop Don’t Drop runs on April 7 and November 6 from 9 am at the Tweed Shire Council Administration Building in Tweed Heads. Bookings are essential for the $30, 10–week program.

Free sessions are available with Tech Generations for seniors to book one-on-one sessions with a St Joseph’s College senior student and learn the basics of using their digital device.

The free sessions are free and available by appointment. In addition, free tech sessions are available on March 10 with Act Now Stay Secure to improve cyber security awareness.

The one-off sessions are invaluable for older and vulnerable residents with practical tools to stay safe online.

Bookings are essential for the no-cost event at the Tweed Shire Council Administration Building in Murwillumbah.
