RESIDENTS and holidaymakers across the Northern Rivers are being urged to prepare for heatwaves as summer temperatures soar.

The region sweltered through a heatwave on December 28, with hot conditions continuing into the New Year.

NSW Ambulance chief superintendent Steve Vaughan encouraged people to stay hydrated and check on elderly or vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours when temperatures climb into the mid to high 30s.

“It is important to stay hydrated during a heatwave and check on family, friends and neighbours who are elderly or vulnerable,”Mr Vaughan said.

He also advised staying updated with Bureau of Meteorology forecasts, taking cool showers, and avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Young children, babies, and people over 65 are particularly vulnerable, as are those with pre-existing medical conditions. Vaughan stressed that planning movements around the weather is vital during summer

Signs of heat-related illness include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and cramps. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should move to a cooler environment and seek shade or use a fan. Serious symptoms, such as a sudden rise in body temperature, decreased sweating, or unusual behaviour, require urgent medical attention or a call to triple zero.

Surf lifesavers have echoed the warnings, urging beachgoers to stay sun smart and swim between the flags during patrol hours. With more people flocking to beaches, they reminded everyone to know their limits in the water.
