Lismore mayor to lead regional cities alliance
LISMORE mayor Steve Krieg has been elected Chair of Regional Cities New South Wales (RCNSW), a coalition of 15 cities advocating for investment to build more liveable, connected, and productive regional communities.
Cr Krieg will lead the alliance for a two-year term alongside Deputy Chair Cr Russell Webb, mayor of Tamworth Regional Council, following their election at a board meeting in the NSW Parliament last week.
Cr Krieg said the alliance plays a critical role in representing regional cities and partnering with the State Government.
“I am passionate about the work of Regional Cities NSW. Our members are a similar size and are facing similar issues.
“We have much work to do as we are on the frontline of change in New South Wales. This includes growing populations, energy transition and climate impacts.
“As chair, I will be a strong voice for our member cities as we meet these opportunities.”
Deputy Chair Cr Webb expressed confidence in Cr Krieg’s leadership.
“Cr Krieg will lead us in the right direction and I am looking forward to working in partnership as we continue to build our strong network of relationships in Macquarie Street,” he said.
Cr Krieg also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Chair Cr Mathew Dickerson, who stepped down following the New South Wales local government elections.
“Cr Dickerson has led us through the many challenges we have encountered over the past few years, particularly as our members faced natural disasters, housing availability and growing skills shortages,” Cr Krieg said.
“Regional cities have received key support in these areas due to his leadership and advocacy. There is still much to do, but the impacts in these areas have been meaningful for our communities,” he said.
RCNSW advocates for policies to address population growth strategically and to improve connectivity through better airports, rail, roads, and digital services.
