BYRON Shire’s rough sleeping response has gained national recognition, with its local homelessness collaboration selected for a major community roadshow.

The Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration was one of 50 groups chosen from more than 200 applicants to take part in the national PLACE (Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment) tour.

Established in 2020, the local initiative is supported by Byron Shire Council and brings together people with lived experience of homelessness, frontline services and community groups.

Council lead Anna Lockwood said the visit helped shine a light on the region’s quiet but crucial efforts.

“Collective action has seen the establishment of a local Assertive Outreach team and a Homeless Health Outreach Team, the re-establishment of Fletcher Street Cottage and ongoing resourcing for Council’s Public Space Liaison Officers,” she said.

The PLACE team visited Byron’s Fletcher Street Cottage and Liberation Larder during the tour, hearing directly from those delivering services on the ground.

Lockwood said the work was ongoing but often invisible.

“Our community needs to be trusted and resourced to make it happen,” Lockwood said.

“Everyone deserves the right to a home.”
