FIJI Airways has begun direct flights between the Gold Coast and Fiji, creating convenient new travel options for Northern Rivers residents and providing seamless connections to destinations including Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco for travellers looking to combine a Fiji stopover with a North American holiday.

The new service operates three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays aboard a modern Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Locals have already been quick to take advantage of launch fares to Nadi, starting from $599 return.

The aircraft features eight business class seats and 162 economy class seats, adding more than 53,000 seats annually to the market.

The inaugural flight last week was marked by ceremonial celebrations in the arrivals hall at Gold Coast Airport.

Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive officer Paul Scurrah said the inaugural service was a landmark moment.

“Since announcing this route, demand has been exceptional with strong forward bookings,” he said.

Queensland Airports Limited chief executive officer Amelia Evans said Fiji was a popular destination in its own right and also an important aviation hub.

“This is a valuable addition to our growing network, particularly as we look toward the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, when Gold Coast Airport will play an important role as an international gateway,” she said.

Queensland minister for environment and tourism Andrew Powell said the government was delivering on its commitment to attract more direct international flights to the state.

“More connections mean more people and more opportunity for our tourism industry,” he said.
