A NEW exhibition inspired by the colours, movement and energy of the ocean will open at Byron Spaces Gallery this month, showcasing the work of local artist Yvonne Fenech.
The exhibition, Ocean Magic, opens on 5 June and features a collection of works shaped by Fenech’s decades-long connection to the sea and her life in the Byron Shire.
A surfer and swimmer since her youth, Fenech said the ocean has remained a constant source of inspiration throughout her artistic practice.
“The ocean continues to inspire me through its energy, movement and light,” she said.
“From the changing colours of each season to the forms that emerge beneath the surface, there’s always something new to experience and translate into my work.”
Fenech first arrived in Byron Bay in the early 1980s and said experiences surfing at Broken Head helped shape the way she sees and paints the ocean. Deep blues, turquoise tones and waves breaking over rocks continue to influence her work today.
She said living in the Byron Shire had played a significant role in her creative development, with the exhibition reflecting both the coastline and memories of Byron’s earlier years.
“Byron Spaces Gallery feels like the perfect home for this exhibition,” she said.
“As a community-based space, it reflects the spirit of what Byron has always been about, a place grounded in creativity, simplicity and shared experiences.”
Fenech said she hoped visitors would leave the exhibition feeling a sense of joy and connection to the natural world.
Ocean Magic is part of the Byron Spaces Gallery seasonal exhibition program, which provides exhibition opportunities for local artists and free arts experiences for the community.
The exhibition will be officially opened on 5 June and will remain on display weekdays from 10am to 4pm until 5 August at the Byron Community Centre in Jonson Street, Byron Bay.
