THE Parliament of NSW has opened the 2025 Parli-Flicks Short Film Award and is inviting young creatives to enter the annual competition about democracy.

Aimed at students from Years 5 to 12, filmmakers can create a one-minute film exploring Australia’s Westminster system and the role of parliament around the 2025 theme of ‘What do I value about democracy?’.

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin said it was an exciting opportunity for local students.

“We have a lot of creative talent in our region, and I’m sure our young students have something to say about their role as young citizens today living in a democracy,” Saffin said.

“There is so much to love about our democratic system, from our ability to take part in fair elections to having a say when laws and important decisions are being made.”

Films will be judged across five categories: Regional, Metropolitan, Primary (Years 5–6), Junior Secondary (Years 7–9), and Best Senior Secondary (Years 10–12).

All finalists will be invited to an awards night at NSW Parliament House, and the winning entry will be awarded the prestigious Parli-Flicks 2025 trophy along with a $500 prize. Shortlisted filmmakers will receive $100 and a medal.

Films can be in live-action, animation, drama, comedy, documentary style, or feature a direct-to-camera approach.

“I encourage local schools and students to get involved and have fun while exploring what democracy means to them,” Saffin said.

Entries close on August 8. For information, visit education.parliament.nsw.gov.au/parli-flicks-short-film-award-2025-entries-now-open
