A NEW Probus club setting up in Byron Bay aims to offer fun activities and new friendships for retirees and semi-retirees.

The first meeting will be held at Byron Bay Services Club from 10am on Tuesday, March 4.

The event is being organised by non-profit organisation Probus South Pacific, which aims to enhance the quality of life of retirees by creating vibrant and inclusive communities where like-minded people can connect, socialise and make the most of their later years.

Its clubs curate a variety of engaging activities, including coffee catch-ups, cinema visits, day trips, walking groups and overnight tours.

Monthly meetings provide an opportunity for retirees to come together and hear talks from guest speakers.

Probus South Pacific’s community engagement officer, Elvis Law, said Probus promotes mental and emotional wellbeing by fostering a sense of belonging and purpose, with the shared experiences and mutual support within clubs helping retirees navigate the significant life transition with confidence and enthusiasm.

“Social engagement is important for everyone’s wellbeing but is particularly important as we enter our later years and leave the security and structure of the workforce behind,” he said.

“Having an active social life provides both mental and physical health benefits, warding off loneliness and depression and increasing longevity.

“Probus clubs offer a wonderful opportunity to reinvent retirement for those who have left their work lives but still crave engagement, purpose and companionship.”
