A NEW roundabout is now operational at the intersection of Byron Bay Road and Byron Street in Lennox Head after a $1.53 million safety upgrade.

Ballina Shire Council has replaced the former T-intersection with a permanent roundabout aimed at improving traffic flow and safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the intersection was an important link in the local network.

“This is a vital upgrade for one of our key arterial routes. The new roundabout not only eases congestion but significantly improves safety for everyone travelling through this busy part of Lennox Head,” she said.

The project included construction of a concrete roundabout, new kerbs, asphalt pavement, improved line marking and signage, and upgraded street lighting.

A new shared path connection and pedestrian refuges have also been added to improve safety and walkability.

The new path will eventually connect with the future Lennox Head shared path between Park Lane and Coopers Close.

The upgrade was funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spots Program.

Council has thanked local residents and road users for their patience during construction and reminded drivers to take care as they adjust to the new layout.
