NEW South Wales Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin has applauded the federal government’s launch of the first National Autism Strategy and action plan announced last week.

Saffin has long advocated for the development of the strategy and welcomed its release by the Federal Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth.

The initiative aims to improve inclusion, support and life outcomes for citizens on the spectrum.

“This strategy means I now will be able to better encourage a comprehensive response at a regional and state level,” Saffin said.

“There are some telling statistics here; people with autism die sooner, experience mental health problems, and are disadvantaged by massively high figures for unemployment.”

The Albanese Government statement said it aimed to ensure autistic people in Australia were understood, empowered and supported.

The Commonwealth’s coordinated national approach seeks to break down barriers to inclusion and equity and improve the evidence, understanding and acceptance of autism.

The four key outcome areas guiding the strategies include social inclusion, economic inclusion, diagnosis, services and supports, and health and mental health.

Rishworth said the government’s vision was to improve the lives of almost 300,000 people.

“Addressing the barriers autistic people face in areas like education, employment, and diagnosis is long overdue, and we are proud to deliver a strategy that will change lives for the better,” Minister Rishworth said.

“This is not a strategy that has been done in isolation. It has been built in consultation and collaboration with autistic people living in Australia.”

The $42.3 million action plan outlines the practical steps the government will take to achieve the vision and outcomes of the strategy over two years.

A detailed epidemiological study is also included to identify the prevalence of autism in Australia and will underpin future policies.

Saffin acknowledged Founder and Chair of the Northern Rivers Autism Association Limited (NRAA) Micheal Lynch and foreshadowed future goals.

“With Business NSW Regional Director Northern Rivers Jane Laverty, he drove local consultations which helped to inform the national strategy.”

“Like me, Micheal is very keen to see the first NSW Autism Strategy become a reality,” Saffin said.
