TWEED Shire Council is holding a community tree planting for National Tree Day on Sunday, July 27.

Community members of all ages are invited to plant 1000 native trees and shrubs in a mass effort to restore the local environment.

Tweed Shire Council waterways project officer Matthew Bloor said the council was excited to bring the community together to make a difference.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with nature, learn about our local environment, and contribute positively to restoration while having fun together,” Bloor said.

Located adjacent to the Tweed’s drinking water supply system, the new planting site will support efforts to improve water quality, reduce erosion during flood events and create habitat for wildlife.

Proceeds from the event will support the Tweed River Restoration – Byangum project, which is funded through the Caring for Catchments initiative delivered by North Coast Regional Landcare Network.

Funded by the Australian Government under the Northern Rivers Recovery and Resilience Program 2022–23, the program is administered by the NSW Reconstruction Authority.

Planet Ark’s National Tree Day was established in 1996 and is Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event.

Features on the day include guided tree planting with advice from Council’s Waterways Team and a communal morning tea.

Tools and materials are available. Solid footwear, sun protection, a hat and a water bottle are required.

The free family-friendly event runs from 9 am to 12 pm at Col Wiley Park, Byangum.
