Welcome home for Tweed Olympians at Museum street party
MURWILLUMBAH’S biggest street party is set for an action-packed day to celebrate the Tweed Regional Museum’s 20th birthday on Saturday, August 31.
Tweed Shire Council has announced an extra feature event to welcome home local Olympians.
The special ceremony will honour the athletes and celebrate their achievements. Formalities will occur after the official Welcome to Country, which kicks off the day’s festivities at around 12.30 pm.
The family-friendly program of live music, market stalls, food and drink offerings, kids’ entertainment, and the Museum on Wheels will celebrate all things Tweed.
The council congratulated all the athletes who called Tweed home. Mayor Chris Cherry, said it had been an incredible achievement for the group and for any athlete to make the Olympic team and represent their sport on the world stage.
“On behalf of the entire Tweed Shire, we are extremely proud of these athletes,” Cr Cherry said.
“They are continuing a proud legacy of Tweed athletes who have represented the country at the highest level.”
Swimmer Flynn Southam came away from Paris with two medals – silver and bronze, and marathon swimmer Moesha Johnson claimed silver in the 10 kilometre swim in the Seine River.
Surfer Jack Robinson finished second for silver in Tahiti. Jack McVeigh was a member of the Boomers basketball team, which made the quarterfinals.
Teen sensation Chloe Covell made her Olympic debut in skateboarding, finishing eighth in the final, breakdancer Jeff Dunne showed his potential in the round-robin stage, and student and swimmer Isabella Rose Miller represented the Solomon Islands in the 50 metre freestyle.
TSC is inviting the community to join them in welcoming our athletes home.
More Olympic-themed activities are planned during the day, from 12 pm to 7 pm next Saturday.
