THE Alex Gibbon Cup will return in 2025 after drawing more than 500 students to its inaugural school rugby sevens competition across northern NSW.
The event, named after Far North Coast rugby union product Alex Gibbon, brought together juniors from under-14 to under-18 divisions for more than 190 games last year.
Gibbon, 32, represented Australia in rugby sevens between 2013 and 2017 and was known as a prolific try-scorer. He grew up playing for the Wollongbar-Alstonville Pioneers and attended St John’s College Woodlawn.
After returning to the region, Gibbon reformed the Richmond Range Club, which now competes in the Far North Coast senior competition. He still plays for the team and has previously represented NSW Country, played at Shute Shield level in Sydney, and had a Super Rugby stint with the Queensland Reds.
He is now the principal of Ray White Gibbon Property Partners, with the Alstonville, Casino and Kyogle branch of the agency sponsoring the 2025 tournament.

“We are thrilled to support grassroots rugby and help create opportunities for the next generation of players,” Gibbon said.
“The tournament is a fantastic platform for young athletes, and we’re proud to be part of its continued growth.”
The 2025 event will feature live streaming, a dedicated videographer, and professional strapping services for all players, thanks to support from Ray White.
The aim is to deliver a better experience for athletes, schools and spectators while attracting new players to the sport.
NSW Rugby Union development officer Will Campbell said he was looking forward to another successful year.
“The response from schools and players last year was phenomenal,” he said.
“We can continue to grow the event and provide an unforgettable experience for young athletes across the region.”
