MAJOR AUSTRALIAN MEDAL HOPES

Aussie Grae Morris is guaranteed a podium finish in men’s windsurfing after qualifying for the final in first place. He will become the first Australian medallist in the discipline since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

BMX ace Saya Sakakibara is on track to make the podium in the BMX racing event at the Olympics after an unbeaten quarter-final run as she enters the semi-finals as top qualifier. The gold medal race will follow on Friday.

Swimmer Cameron McEvoy was the fastest in qualifying for the men’s 50m freestyle final and could be the first Australian male to make the podium for the event.

Golden girl Kaylee McKeown will race for her third gold medal at the Olympics in the women’s 200m backstroke final, to continue Australia’s dominance in the pool.

OTHER AUSTRALIANS IN ACTION

Australia will look to secure their place in the women’s 3×3 basketball semi-finals as they face off against Azerbaijan and Spain.

High jump duo Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers will be out to make a statement in qualification on the first day of competition at the Stade de France.

Rowers Jess Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre will go for gold in the women’s pair final.

The men’s decathlon kicks off with Aussie Ashley Moloney looking to do one better than his bronze at Tokyo and compatriot Daniel Golubovic will hope to continue his development after silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Tennis veterans Matt Ebden and John Peers will take to the court in their semi-final clash against Americans Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz in the men’s doubles, with a berth in the gold-medal match beckoning.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING

The men’s 10,000m will be the only gold medal decided on Friday in the athletics schedule. Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei is the three-time world champion, going for his first Olympic gold medal in the event.

The men’s and women’s judo events finish up ahead of the mixed team preliminary round and finals on day 8.

Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus (swimming – women’s 4x200m freestyle relay) – after a disappointing result in Tokyo, the relay team set a new Olympic record. They led from the start, winning Australia’s fifth gold at the pool.

BRONZE

Jemima Montag (women’s 20km walk) – Montag battled through tough conditions in the heat to take out bronze as China’s Yang Jiayu took gold.

American Kate Douglass has won her first Olympic gold medal while breaking an American record in the women’s 200m breaststroke after holding off defending champion Tatjana Smith.

Gymnastics legend Simone Biles has won the women’s artistic gymnastics individual all-round, taking home her second gold at the Paris Games and her sixth Olympic gold overall.

Italy’s Giovanni de Gennaro pulled out a sensational run to win gold in the men’s K1 slalom event after just edging out French teenager Titouan Castryck by two-tenths of a second.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED

There was major controversy at the boxing, with Algerian Khelif forcing Italian Angela Carini to sensationally abandon their 66kg first-round bout in less than a minute. The Italian said post-fight that she needed to “safeguard her life”. The bout highlighted conflicting gender eligibility rules.

Top Australian gold medal hope Saya Sakakibara dominated the BMX racing quarter-finals, winning her three heats ahead of the semi-finals and final on Friday.

After a shock loss to Nigeria, the Opals are back on track after beating Canada 70-65 with three-time Olympian Cayla George starring in the crucial win to keep their women’s basketball medal hopes alive.

Australians Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar beat Canada in a must-win pool match to win a place in the round of 16 in the women’s beach volleyball.
