FAR North Coast water polo is gearing up for the second half of the season, with competition tightening between the leading teams in the region.

Alstonville and Mullumbimby currently lead the open men’s competition, with Lennox Head emerging as an outside contender.

“The strength of Lennox Head has been a bit of a surprise packet and they’re a chance of playing finals,” Far North Coast Water Polo president James Nunn said.

“They might not have the same speed up and down the pool as other teams, but they can control a game and score goals at will.”

“Mullumbimby have the experience, they train regularly and maintain their consistency.”

“They’re always strong in the second half of the season and look to consolidate their spot well before finals.”

Byron Bay has returned to the men’s competition this season for the first time in several years.

The club also fields a strong women’s team, competing against Lennox Head, with a junior Alstonville girls’ team rounding out the top three.

The women’s division features six teams and also includes non-competitive games designed to attract newcomers to the sport.

“Some of those players are already interested in moving into the more competitive division next year,” Nunn said.

“They’ve been able to build their skills against players of similar ability, which benefits both them and the competition.”

“The season started with everyone together at a gala day at Ballina pool, which gave teams a chance to see how others play.”

“We’ll be heading back there for a grand final day in March.”

Nunn said the competition had also recruited new referees this season.

Alstonville teenager Rylan Watson will be among the officials at the grand finals on Saturday, March 21.

The competition resumes after the Christmas and New Year break on Monday, January 19.
