{"id":101293,"date":"2024-08-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=101293"},"modified":"2024-08-28T19:08:57","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T09:08:57","slug":"neighbourhood-cafe-berties-opens-in-ballina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/neighbourhood-cafe-berties-opens-in-ballina\/","title":{"rendered":"Neighbourhood caf\u00e9 Bertie&#8217;s opens in Ballina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HE HAS worked at some of Sydney&#8217;s top restaurants, including Rockpool and Bondi Icebergs, and now Tim Coleman is bringing his skills to a new caf\u00e9 in Ballina.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman and his wife Rhianne Contreras, who has worked as a food, props and interior stylist for magazines such as Vogue and Gourmet Traveller, have pooled their talents to open Bertie&#8217;s Food and Drink in Cherry Street.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the UK, the couple left to go travelling in 2009 and fell in love with Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman&#8217;s first job in Sydney was as a sommelier at acclaimed chef Neil Perry&#8217;s Rockpool restaurant in The Rocks.<\/p>\n<p>He has also worked as a sommelier and supervisor at Icebergs and was part of the opening team for Farm and Co. at Cudgen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101960\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-101960\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/TimColemanandRhiann_33727.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim Coleman and Rhianne Contreras at Bertie&#8217;s in Ballina. Photos: FREDDY MORALES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The couple moved to the Northern Rivers in 2019 after they started a family and wanted more work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 is open from 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, offering breakfast, coffee, freshly made salads and made-to-order deli-style sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include a hearty focaccia with shaved Girolamo mortadella, Vanella stracciatella, green olives and pistachio.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman has taken on the role of chef and will be the face of the new eatery, while Contreras designed the fit-out, which includes a wraparound bench seat with upholstered cushion backs and repurposed bar stools that have been reupholstered and powder coated.<\/p>\n<p>While Byron Bay is strongly reliant on the tourist trade, the pair wanted to open a neighbourhood eatery for locals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/AsandwichfromBer_20235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"527\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sandwich from Bertie&#8217;s in Ballina.
