A $6 million water infrastructure upgrade is set to improve Mullumbimby’s resilience to droughts and floods, ensuring a reliable supply for residents.<\/p>\n
Mullumbimby’s water comes from Lavertys Gap weir on Wilsons Creek, a source that was severely impacted by the 2019\/20 drought and the 2022 floods.<\/p>\n
During these crises, an emergency connection to the regional water network had to be activated to supply part of the town.<\/p>\n
Parliamentary Secretary for Disaster Recovery Janelle Saffin said the upgrades would help safeguard the community’s water supply.<\/p>\n
“Doing this work now will ensure the Mullumbimby community withstands the next flood in much better shape,” Ms Saffin said.<\/p>\n
The Mullumbimby Water Main Upgrade, funded by the $145 million Northern Rivers Water and Wastewater Repair and Recovery Program, will be delivered by the NSW Reconstruction Authority, NSW Public Works, and Byron Shire Council.<\/p>\n
The project includes installing a new, dedicated water main along Tandys Lane between the Pacific Highway and Gulgan Road, as well as from Mullumbimby Road\/Manns Road to the town’s Azalea Street reservoirs.<\/p>\n
Additional upgrades include a new water booster pump station and bypass at the Azalea Street reservoir site and minor water main improvements at the Left Bank Road and Tristram Road intersection.<\/p>\n
Local company Keane Civil & Construction has been contracted to complete the project, which is expected to be finished by mid-2025.<\/p>\n
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance water infrastructure in the Northern Rivers, ensuring communities are better prepared for future challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
